Waiting...

I had to climb over 48 4x4 bits of pressed paper, that are drying with four coats of gesso, to scan heart seven, which you can see below. That is to say it's the fourth coat of gesso that is drying on one side. There will be four more on the other side, minimum. It feels, at times, like most of my artistic life is spent watching the gesso dry. I know that several of my friends feel the same! When no inspiration will come, I like to sit down with a sponge brush and throw some coats of white onto various objects. I like to be ready when inspiration drops in, like an unexpected guest three hours early, whe you've got one hand up a turkey's butt and your hair is still in that topknot twist you put it in to keep it out of the bath water, then promptly forgot about. Yeah, it's like that.

Momo and Paco keep trying to eat the hearts, but have thus far been unsuccessful. They have, however, developed a taste for the Califoria redrood table in the livingroom. Yikes.

Do you have any fresh art this year? Please feel free to link to your blog or flickr pool in the comments. Eye candy is always welcome.

Shaped & Painted & Not Yet Scanned

Snow. So much snow (as in days it has snowed, not accumulation). I should go outside and sculpt some hearts in snow and ice, photograph them, then scamper back in and upload. If it weren't so cold, and I weren't such a pansy when it comes to cold (after a year of living in Savannah), I might just do that. This project is the excuse that might send me out there in 3 scarves. must find socks.

I was introduced to Andy Goldsworthy's work when I was 15. I still love it very much. Heart edition? Brrr.

Hearts 7 through 11 aren't scanned in yet. Coming Soon.

I dug out my large easel from behind a hulking set of shelves, and put a 15x20ish canvas on it. There are several uneven coats of gesso on it, and a friend sent me some watercolors for the holidays. Stay tuned.

You know it's only a matter of time before the heart shaped food starts happening...

Challenged

Posting to a blog every day is challenging. You're probably thinking, "Uh, Nicci. This is day 3. You're already challenged?" I'm always a little challenged! LOL no, but seriously. This once a day every day thing is pretty rough. I'm more of a go nuts and make a bunch of work, then fiddle with backgrounds for a couple days, gesso everything la la la. And then it gets cat or dog hair stuck in it, so I have to pick it out, then gesso again. Animal fur is a free bonus in my artwork.

It seemed wise to start with greyscale 2D work, then progress slowly adding color as it wants to seep in. I can't resist the red forever. Crimson is pushy, you know.

Meanwhile, the acrylic ink progresses, and the canvas gets slightly larger... from 3.5 to 4 inches at the largest dimension (you'll see tomorrow)! 4x4 is surely to follow, given the number of pressed paper coasters in my possession. (Thank you, Farmboy!)

I found a couple of neat little flickr groups dedicated to the art of the heart. There's some good stuff, so eh seen it 5 thousand times before stuff, but also the occasionally really great things to be found there.

One of my adorable puppies ate my favorite flip flops while I was messing around with inks earlier. Mojito likes to nibble things in my bedroom, and leave his chewies, bones, and treats in my bed. We're having boundary issues. Paco, the other pup, ate someone's artwork the other day, when Spike (orange & white kitty), kicked it off of my desk. Art through furry adversity. You know you love a creature when they trash art and you still love them. Faith (black kitty) likes to drag things with dangly bits through her water bowl. You can imagine how my chunky book pages fare with her around...

If you make any heart related art, please feel free to leave me links in comments! I would love to go look.

Back to the art!

Welcome to Heart 365

01 January 2010.
The start date is random, though it seemed as good a time as any, what with everyone everywhere making resolutions. This isn't so much a resolution as a Challenge to Self. The idea occurred to me a couple of years ago, I only just decided to do it. What is it?

365 hearts in 365 days.

Any media, any size.

Whether it's one a day or three every few days, at least 365 selections will be posted here.

Go.
